Superman Movie Three

Marvel Comics | Superman - Movie 3

The plot

The new arch villian is Ross Webster is a rich industrialist and owner of a huge business empire. With the help of modern computer technology he wants to expand his power and influence. Gus Gorman is a computer programmer, who has a knack for his job. After doing some fraud, he is blackmailed by Webster and begins to work for him as he strives for world domination. His first step is to create a monopoly on coffee in the world market and he assigns Gorman the job of building a weather satellite to destroy Colombia’s coffee crop. The plan is foiled by Superman. However, Webster is not beaten yet and he remembers an interview, Superman gave Lois Lane, where he stated that kryptonite was his only weakness. Again he uses Gorman, this time offering to build him the quickest and best computer in the world, if he makes synthetic kryptonite the offer is too tempting for the computer genius and he agrees.
Meanwhile Clark Kent goes back to Smallville to report for newspaper, it is also the place where he spent his youth. On the way to Smallville, Superman is needed as a chemical plant is close to destruction. As he gets to Smallville, he is reunited with his childhood girlfriend Lana Lang, who now has a son. Again Superman is needed and this time he saves Lana Lang’s life. The two become attracted to each other and Lana persuades Superman to attend her son’s birthday. Ross Webster uses this public appearance. Disguised, he hands over to Superman the synthetic kryptonite. Gorom however made a mistake while making it and it doesn’t have the desired effect. Instead of robbing Superman’s powers it alters them and he becomes selfish, which causes him to delay in rescuing a truck driver from his jackknifed rig and to question his own self-worth. As the Kryptonite takes effect, Superman becomes depressed, angry and casually destructive, committing petty acts of vandalism such as blowing out the Olympic torch and straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Ross, seeing that Superman is presumably out of the way, creates new plans and orders a supercomputer to be built.
Superman fights an inner struggle and beats his own ego, he then has to tackle the supercomputer, but is seriously harmed as the computer shots rays of real kryptonite. Gorman sees his wrongs and doesn’t want to be the man that kills Superman and attacks the computer. The damaged computer develops an own-self, repelling his attackers and is close to destroying the world. However Superman uses acid from the plant he saved before and the computer is destroyed as the acid burns through it. Webster and his cronies are left for the police. Goram is given a second chance and job recommendation from Superman and Lana Lang moves to the city and gets a job at the newspaper. After a small correction of his all his wrong-doings, Superman can finally smile again.

Cast

Christopher Reeve is back as Superman, but the actual main role is actually played by Richard Pryor who portrays Gomam. Anette O'Toole as Lana Lang.  Robert Vaughn plays the cold and unscrupulous villain Ron Webster.

Prizes and Reviews

Superman III got two Saturn Awards nominees. Richard Pryor and Giorgo Moroder (film music) won the Golden Raspberry, the mockery price in the film business.
The film flopped with the fans, critics and the box office alike. One of the main reasons being that Pryor was credited higher than Reeve’s, which made Superman figure second rate to Webster’s character. The fans were not amused.
