The plot
The film starts in Congress, Senator Robert Kelly attempts to pass a "Mutant Registration Act", which would force mutants to publicly reveal their identities and abilities.
 At the same time, a girl named Rogue runs away from her home in Meridian, Mississippi. She meets Wolverine in Canada. Suddenly, both of them are attacked by Sabretooth, a mutant and associate of the evil Magneto.Luckly Cyclops and Storm arrive and save Wolverine and Rogue and bring them to the X-Mansion. Professor Charles Xavier runs the facility, and is the leader of a group of mutants who want to stop Magneto and solve the problems between humans and mutants.Their good intesions are put to the test as senator Kelly is kidnapped by evil mutants and is artificially induced with a mutation. He manages to escape. Meanwhile Rogue is tricked by Mystique, an evil mutant to leave the school. She can be convinced to remain at the school but is abducted by Mystique. Kelly’s mutation becomes unstable when he reaches the school and he turns into a puddle of water.
Magneto intends to use Rogue's ability to absorb other mutant's abilities on himself so that Rogue can power his machine.Through the sabotage of the Cerebro, Xavier falls into a coma.Magneto plans to mutate all the world leaders at a summit.The X-men arrive to the scence but seem to be losing the final battle agaist evil but manage to regroup.Together and with the help of Xavier, who has recovered from the coma and destroy Magneto’s maschine. Magneto and Mystique are caught and go to jail. In his cell Magneto plays chess with Xavier, vowing to continue the fight. Xavier checkmates him and says the X-Men are ready and leaves.

Cast

Hugh Jackman plays the charismatic Logan (Wolverine). Patrick Stewart swapped the Enterprise to play Professor X. Rogue is played by Anna Paquin. Magneto is played by Ian McKellen. With performers like Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), HalleBerry (Storm) and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique), the supporting roles are well cast.

Prizes and Reviews

The film received an Empire Award and was nominated for 10 categories in the Saturn Awards. Of which it won 6. At the cinemas, the X-Men were a worldwide success and brought in box office earnings of 296 million U.S. dollars.
The reviews were mostly positive. It was agreed that the film was excellent and Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were two ideal figures as adversaries. The film was met with much approval and managed to excite the most critical comic fans. Due to the great commercial success, the cinemas were in for more X-Men.
